Excel table tagging

Pick a named table in the workbook, insert it into the document as a spreadsheet, and tag it once: each row takes its concept, each column its period, unit and scale.

Illustrative Pick a named table from the workbook and bring it into the document as a spreadsheet.

How it works

Two kinds of decision tag the whole table

You decide once per row and once per column; the platform writes a fact for every figure where they meet.

  1. Start from suggested concepts

Run Auto-tag and the platform suggests a US GAAP concept for each untagged row of the spreadsheet. Accept, change or reject each one; nothing is tagged until a person accepts it.

  2. Give each row its concept

Assign the row's concept and, where the table breaks a figure down, its dimension members. Every cell in the row takes them.

Illustrative Give a row its concept and its dimensions once; every cell in the row inherits them.
  3. Give each column its context

Set the column's period, unit and scale once. Every row's fact in that column follows.

  4. Check every fact the table produced

The tags list groups each fact by its table and its row, so the whole table can be checked in one place.

Why it matters

The table is tagged by its structure

A note of 40 rows over three periods is 40 row decisions and 3 column decisions, and the 120 facts follow from them.

  • One concept per row and one context per column, applied the same way to every figure
  • A correction to a row or a column reaches every figure it covers
  • Fewer places for a figure and its tag to disagree

Works with

  • Prior-period tagging

Match each untagged figure to the prior filing's tag, see why, and accept it.

  • Assisted tagging

Suggested US GAAP concepts for tables imported from Excel; nothing is tagged until a person accepts it.

  • Review and validation

Fact-level review, blocking errors and warnings, and one view of what is left.

  • Import and compare

Bring in an existing iXBRL filing and compare a draft with it, concept by concept.
